Open Data Hub Day 2026
At the Open Data Hub Day in Bolzano, Lucia Felbauer and Emma Giacomelli Boldrini presented the DIGIWAY project and provided insights into key approaches for delivering interoperable geodata to enhance safety in the Alpine region.

Open geodata as a foundation
The presentation focused on the central objective of DIGIWAY: the aggregation and harmonisation of reliable geodata from the three regions of Tyrol, South Tyrol and Trentino. The aim is to provide an open dataset on the hiking trail network that serves as a basis for digital applications – for example for tour planning, safety-related information or visitor management. It became clear that, particularly in mountain hiking, a consistent and quality-assured data basis is often lacking, even though digital tour planning is becoming increasingly important.
Key content and products
Selected examples were used to present key project results. These include in particular the comparison tool for trail classifications, the exposure map and the harmonised geodata dataset provided via the Open Data Hub.
A special focus was placed on interoperability: different data models, systems and quality levels in the three regions are brought together through automated processes and transformed into a unified dataset. This dataset is made available as open data and can be directly used by applications and platforms.
Application and outlook
The exposure map represents a complementary tool and specifically depicts the potential consequences of a fall. The dataset is provided as open data and can be integrated into existing applications via an interface.
Finally, the question was raised to what extent this approach can contribute to accident prevention and support tour planning in the future, and how it can be taken up and further developed by additional stakeholders.
At the same time, participants were explicitly invited to critically reflect on the approach and to further develop it. Within the scope of the project, not all possible development steps could be implemented, which is why GIS developers in particular are encouraged to build upon this work and develop additional approaches and products.
DIGIWAY in the context of the Open Data Hub
The presentation demonstrated how DIGIWAY is concretely integrated into the infrastructure of the Open Data Hub and how the project results are made available there. This creates an important basis not only for providing data, but also for making them actively usable – for example via interfaces or web components for external applications. The contribution highlighted the potential of open and harmonised geodata: they not only enable improved digital tour planning, but also form the foundation for new applications, models and services in the Alpine region.
