The following explanations are taken from the Salzburg hiking and mountain trail concept, which was developed in 2005 by the Salzburg Association of Municipalities in cooperation with the State of Salzburg.
Walking trail/Easy hiking trail: easy (blue)
Easy hiking trails in the permanent settlement area and adjoining forests that run through flat terrain and do not feature major inclines. Requirements: No special requirements; can be walked in trainers or street shoes. No specific equipment for progress is necessary. The trail can be followed even without a hiking map. Blue marking: walking paths and easy hiking trails, especially in the valley area. Minor elevation gains.
Mountain hiking trail: moderately difficult (red)
Mountain hiking trails where at least some surefootedness is already necessary. Steep steps, watercourses, narrow sections and eroded gullies caused by washouts can occur on these trails. Requirements: A minimum level of orientation is required. Over‑the‑ankle hiking/trekking/ mountain boots with grippy soles are recommended. A hiking map (topographic map) of the respective area is recommended. Red marking: predominantly mountain hiking trails, with some narrower and sloping sections. Steep steps may occur along the route. A good head for heights is required in places. Over‑the‑ankle hiking/trekking/mountain boots with non‑slip soles are required.
Difficult mountain hiking trails and alpine trails that are secured at exposed places with ropes, artificial steps, ladders, chains, etc. Hands are used for progression and to support balance. The trail is not always clearly visible as such. In part there are exposed sections with a risk of falling, scree, sloping grass, rock or broken terrain. Old snow may need to be expected. Requirements: Appropriate mountaineering experience is necessary. You should also be familiar with using a detailed hiking map (topographic map). Over‑the‑ankle hiking/trekking/ mountain boots with grippy soles are absolutely essential. Rope protections, artificial footholds and similar aids should not cause difficulties even on the descent. Hiking poles can sometimes be a hindrance. Black marking: difficult mountain hiking trails and alpine trails, often narrow and steep sections. Surefootedness and a good head for heights are absolutely essential. In wet conditions, with residual snow or ice, these trails are dangerous.
Responsibility for the preparation and publication lies with the Salzburg Association of Municipalities in cooperation with the State of Salzburg. The content is based on the uniform trail standards of the Club Arc Alpin (CAA) as well as on the guidelines of the trail concept developed by the German Alpine Club (DAV) and the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV). The concept forms the basis for the uniform classification, marking and signage of hiking and mountain trails in the federal state of Salzburg.
