The Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR) is a Europe-wide press and media freedom protection mechanism that tracks, monitors and reacts to violations of press and media freedom in EU Member States and Candidate Countries. The MFRR also provides legal and practical support to journalists, and conducts public advocacy to protect journalists and media workers.
Press freedom in Europe is more than an abstract ideal; it lies at the very core of European democracy. Today, however, press and media freedom are increasingly threatened by disinformation, hostile laws, precarious media economies, as well as physical and digital attacks. The MFRR Summit 2025 convenes journalists, policymakers, and civil society to identify and confront these escalating pressures.
This year’s Summit feeds into EU Democracy Shield policy discussions, highlighting journalism as vital democratic infrastructure. Drawing on MFRR’s monitoring, missions, and policy work, the event will explore five key pillars of media resilience: economic viability, safety, legal protection, AI governance, and implementation of safeguards.
