Abies alba: music and songs from Trentino

20.06.2008

On Friday 20th June the musical group Abies alba performed at the office of the European Region Tyrol – South Tyrol – Trentino in Brussels.

Since 1991 the group Abies alba (white fir) has been engaged in covering traditional music, songs and dances from Trentino and the North of Italy. The aim is to revive the tradition of the so-called „orchestrine”, that in the 50s played at social events and festivals in villages and valleys. To play their music, the Abies alba use various instruments, among which stand out are the barrel organ, the violin, the bass, the flutes, the ocarinas, the hurdy-gurdy, and the bagpipe. In 1994 the group recorded its first CD, „In punto alla mezzanotte”, followed in 1998 by the box set for children „Nel paese di Armonia” and in 2000 by „Oggi non si lavora”. At Christmas 2006 their recent CD production was presented, „Abies alba, musiche e canti del Trentino”. Over the last years the group has performed in most Italian regions and, on many occasions, abroad too. The concert in Brussels was held within the initiative proposed by the liaison office of the Autonomous province of Trento in collaboration with the association „Trentini nel mondo”. There are four cultural dates to which the Trentini of Belgium and people working for the UE institutions are invited. On 25th April don Marcello Farina presented his book entitled „A rinascere si impara. Filosifia per tutti”, on 16th May Pino Loperfido presented his „Caro Alcide, Degapseri Alcide Amedeo Francesco: storia di un italiano”. Next October, on the occasion of the fouth date, Renzo Maria Grosselli, a journalist working for L`Adige, will present „Ritratti di emigranti trentini”. These dates are particularly appreciated by the „trentini” and by many EU officers as they represent an occasion to meet and exchange information.
